Are there only cookies?

Some websites may use other types of storage similar to cookies but with greater capacity, such as other forms of local data storage on the user’s device, for example:

  • HTML5 localStorage and sessionStorage: space that a website can use on the user’s device. These can usually be deleted by clearing the browsing history.
  • Flash “Local Shared Objects” (Silverlight “isolated storage”): they are stored inside the Microsoft folder where the user profile is kept. You must go into that folder and delete them manually (for example, Vimeo videos).
Flash is used to add multimedia elements to a website and, for that, it stores files on the user’s device.
  • A web beacon is used to track your activity by inserting a tiny image you don’t even notice. When you browse the web, it loads with the page and the server where the image is hosted records the access time and how many times you have visited.

These files are more intrusive than cookies because they are harder to delete, store more information and are independent of the browser used. We do not use this type of storage.
